BALANCE: PREFACE

The pendulum swings…back and forth…back and forth; sometimes just a bit; at times more violently; occasionally enough to go over the top. This is the natural history of our planet and of human society. When it swings over the top, a major cataclysm; in nature, mass extinction; in society, the fall of civilizations.

This is the nature of things. Change is constant, often without control. Our species, however, has reached a point in our development where we are gaining more and more influence over our environment and of our destiny. Decisions can affect which way the pendulum swings and how far it goes.

First, we must learn to control ourselves and find the balance.
