THE WEAPONIZATION OF ME TOO
Diminishing the credibility of a vital issue
The Me Too movement has been a long time in coming. An all too common way of life in our society has been men, whether through position or sheer physical force, sexually abusing women. Rarely, if ever, have incidents been reported. If a woman dared speak up she was generally ignored or became the accused. There is certainly no doubt that Harvey Weinstein and his ilk should be severely punished.
Does indiscretion equal rape?
More and more however, we see accusations weaponized for personal and political purposes. As the movement gained momentum, Al Franken was forced to relinquish his Senate seat with no evidence of substance. And we have seen repeated occurrences regardless of the incident or severity. Forcible rape and misinterpreted gestures are placed in the same category, casting blemishes on otherwise upstanding men. The pendulum has swung to the extreme opposite (see Balance), ruining lives and careers of the innocent along with those deserving of the harshest penalties.
What are Governor Cuomo’s real crimes?
Many who have been following recent events in New York, men and women, have noted how far off base the movement can wander from reality. Governor Andrew Cuomo certainly appears to be guilty of the conditions in nursing homes and subsequent cover up. The deplorable conditions supported by powerful lobbies (see Nightmare, Pt. 3) were his inheritance as governor, one that he perpetuated, leading to the deaths of thousands of our elderly. This should be thoroughly investigated and, if found guilty, prosecuted. His bully tactics to prevent legislators from voting against his policies are legend. But the accusations by women are in most cases laughable, if anything nothing more than trivial indiscretions.
Should we jump to judgement without evidence?
And now we see New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer accused by a past consensual lover while involved in a tight battle for mayor. Certainly, his political adversaries will benefit. And really…why did she decide that this was the time to throw out accusations about an affair long ago terminated? Does any of the furor make sense? Those quick to condemn him are truly affronts to the American ideal.
Trivializing a vital issue
So this is where we are. With innocent women falling victim to vicious men’s unconscionable behavior, we now find innocent men victimized by false accusations. This weaponization of sexual allegations only serves to diminish the credibility of this crucial issue.
